Given the short amount of time they have to accomplish that, the outlook isn't good.

A lot of the interaction seems to be from the same playbook and the series may have a hard time trying to establish these characters as something unique. What remains to be seen is if the major characters can get beyond their obvious roots in other series and make viewers forget their slightly more than passing resemblance to Mulder & Scully. Using elements of The X Files and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the two-hour premiere definitely sets up enough potential storylines to keep viewers interested. The twist – this is Lilly's granddaughter and she's pregnant, a condition she didn't have when she left. Richard (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Crossing Jordan), an African American pilot that disappeared during the Korean War just after taking a beating from his fellow pilots for 'carrying on' with a white woman, returns and happens to meet another member of the 4,400 that looks exactly like his lost love, Lilly. He also has the disturbing ability to make things shake and shatter as he gets more and more distraught. He returns home to discover that his business has been taken away and his wife is suffering from dementia in a nursing home. Needless to say, this tends to put off prospective foster parents. A cute little girl who seemingly has the ability to see events in the future. Maia (Conchita Campbell), the youngest member of the 4,400, is also the oldest, having disappeared in 1946 at the age of 8. Mulder & Scully, er, I mean Baldwin (Joel Gretsch) and Skouris (Jacqueline McKenzie) investigate The 4400. The high concept gives the series some opportunities for personal drama and the pilot certainly takes advantage of that but manages to add some twists: Like the rest of the 4,400, he has no memory of what happened to him after he was abducted. His nephew, Shawn (Patrick Flueger, The Princess Diaries) has returned as one of the 4,400 but doesn't have any answers for his Uncle. Cut from the Mulder & Scully mold, Diana Skouris (Jacqueline McKenzie, Deep Blue Sea) is a former member of the Centers for Disease Control and her partner, Tom Racker (Joel Gretsch, Legend of Bagger Vance, Taken) is former FBI with a personal connection to the case his son was put into a coma three years ago, the same night his nephew disappeared.

For some reason, the Department of Homeland Security is given the job of getting to the bottom of the mystery. That's the intriguing concept behind the new USA Network limited series The 4400, executive produced by Star Trek veterans Ira Behr and Rene Echevarria.
